The 5 Questions Every Car Shopper Asks AI Before Picking a Dealer

Walk into any dealership in America and the average salesperson still thinks the customer's research trail starts on Google. It doesn't. A growing share of it starts in a chat window — and by the time that shopper hits your lot, they've already asked an AI model five questions about buying a car in your market. If your store isn't in those answers, you don't exist to that shopper.

Here are the five prompts I see shoppers running most often, what the AI model needs to see to name your store, and what you can do about it this week.

    1. "What's the best [brand] dealer near [city]?"

This is the modern version of "Google near me" — and it's the single most common AI prompt a shopper runs. What matters here is that ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude each pull from a mix of your Google Business Profile, third-party review sites, OEM locator data, and any structured data on your own website.

If your GBP categories are fuzzy, your reviews are thin, or your site doesn't have proper LocalBusiness and AutoDealer schema, you're probably one of the stores getting skipped. The AI model doesn't rank you out — it just leaves you out of the list entirely.

    2. "Who has the best price on a [model] in [my area]?"

This one scares dealers and it should. Shoppers are asking the AI to compare — and the AI is pulling from cached pricing content, vendor SRP pages, and third-party aggregators. If your VDPs don't expose clean, machine-readable pricing and your inventory feed isn't well-structured, the model guesses. And when it guesses, it often quotes the competitor down the road because their data is cleaner.

The fix isn't dropping price. It's making sure your pricing data is present, consistent, and parseable across your site, your OEM locator, and any third-party sources the AI trusts.

    3. "Is [dealership name] a good dealership?"

This is the reputation prompt. The shopper has already narrowed it down and is now sanity-checking you before driving over. The AI will summarize your Google reviews, DealerRater, Yelp, and anything else it can access — plus any public complaints, BBB mentions, or news items.

What most dealers miss: AI models weight recent reviews much more heavily than old ones, and they pick up on patterns. One angry review from 2021 won't sink you. A cluster of service complaints from last quarter absolutely will. Run this prompt on your own store once a month. Seriously.

    4. "What should I know before buying a [model]?"

This is where most dealers don't even realize they could be showing up. When a shopper asks a general buying-advice question, the AI pulls from content that demonstrates expertise — comparison pages, FAQ content, model guides, test-drive walkthroughs.

If your site is 90% SRP and VDP with zero content that teaches anything, you're invisible to this prompt by design. The stores that get named here are the ones with real content — a page comparing trims, an FAQ about maintenance schedules, a blog post about what changed in the new model year. Not vendor boilerplate. Original, specific, your voice.

    5. "Can you help me negotiate with [dealership]?"

This one is wild and most GMs have never run it. The shopper literally asks the AI for tips on negotiating against your store. The AI will cheerfully oblige, often using whatever it knows about your pricing patterns, market position, and reputation.

You can't stop shoppers from doing this. What you can do is make sure the AI's knowledge of your store leans into the things you want emphasized — transparent pricing, no-hassle process, service reputation — rather than whatever it scraped from a Reddit thread three years ago.

The point isn't to panic. It's to audit.

Run all five prompts yourself tonight. Use ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude — they will give you wildly different answers, and that's the whole point. Any model that doesn't mention your store on prompts one through three is a model your shoppers are getting advice from without you in the conversation.

This is the gap AEO Whisperer was built to measure. I'm a GM at a BMW store in Jersey — I built this because I couldn't get a straight answer from any vendor about what these tools were actually saying about my dealership. At $99 a month, one incremental deal covers the subscription for years.

Run your free AEO visibility check here. It takes about 60 seconds. No credit card. No sales call. Just your score and what to do about it.
