Back on Car Dealership Guy: Why AI Should Empower Your Team, Not Replace It

On August 26th, I had the opportunity to rejoin Sam D'Arc on Daily Dealer Live — the Car Dealership Guy podcast's live show — to talk about AEO and what AI search visibility actually looks like from inside a dealership. It was my second time on the show this year, and the conversation has changed a lot since March.

For anyone who missed it, Car Dealership Guy is the leading media platform in automotive retail — their podcast, newsletter, and social channels reach tens of thousands of dealers, GMs, and industry professionals every week. Getting invited back to talk about AEO in front of that audience was a big moment for what we're building at AEO Whisperer.

    How This Started

My first appearance on CDG was back on March 30th. At that point, AEO Whisperer was still relatively new, and the concept of AI search visibility for dealerships was something most people in the industry hadn't thought about yet. I went on the show and explained what we'd been seeing — that car shoppers were asking ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini where to buy their next car, and most dealers had no idea what those engines were saying about them.

The response was immediate. CDG News ran a full writeup — "GM Mike Yates on using AI for service, inventory, and search visibility at BMW of Bridgewater" — and the conversations that followed, from other GMs reaching out to vendors asking questions, made it clear that this was a problem the industry was ready to talk about.

What Changed Between March and August

A lot. When I went on CDG in March, AEO Whisperer scored dealerships on a single AEO metric. By August, we'd shipped six major algorithm updates and expanded to three independent scoring pillars — AEO, GEO, and SEO — each with its own dedicated analysis engine and AI model. The platform went from a visibility check to a comprehensive AI readiness assessment.

The industry moved fast too. AI Overviews are now showing up on the majority of Google searches. More than 80% of searches end without a click. Half of consumers are using AI-powered search, and nearly half of those say it's their primary source for product discovery. The shift we were talking about in March as something dealers should pay attention to has become something dealers can't afford to ignore.

    The August Episode

The August 26th episode — "Ulrich on Digital Dealer, McVeigh on Leadership Balance, Yates on AEO" — featured me alongside Tustin Ulrich, General Manager at Roper Kia, and Mike McVeigh, Sales Manager at Jeff D'Ambrosio Auto Group. Each of us brought a different angle to the conversation, and the segment on AEO went deeper than the first appearance.

This time around, I was able to talk about what we've actually learned from scoring hundreds of dealerships across multiple markets. Not just the theory of AI visibility, but the patterns — which signals matter most, where dealers are consistently falling short, and what the stores that score well are doing differently. The conversation has matured from "this is coming" to "here's what the data shows."

    Built, Not Bought

One point I really wanted to make on the show — and it came through in the clip CDG posted — is that I'm not interested in AI because I think it can help us reduce headcount. I'm interested in what it can do for the people we already have.

If AI can eliminate repetitive work and make an employee more efficient, that gives them more time to help customers, more time to focus on the work that actually matters, and maybe even get home a little earlier to spend time with their family. Our employees are still our greatest asset. AI is simply another tool we can give them to be even better at what they do.

That's really what Built, Not Bought means to me. Start with the people and the operation, identify the problem, and then figure out how technology can help. AI doesn't change the fundamentals of running a great dealership. Problem first. Assemble the right team. Develop the process. Measure the results. The technology is new. Good leadership isn't.

    The LinkedIn Clip

Car Dealership Guy posted a clip from the episode that really captured the core of what I was getting at. If you haven't seen it, check it out on LinkedIn — the engagement in the comments showed just how many dealers are starting to take AI visibility seriously.

That's the thing about being on a platform like CDG — the reach goes well beyond the live audience. The clip gets shared, the newsletter picks it up, and suddenly you're hearing from GMs in markets you've never even audited asking how they can check their AI visibility.

Why This Matters for AEO Whisperer

I built AEO Whisperer because I saw a problem from the inside. I'm not a marketing agency or a SaaS startup founder pitching from the outside in. I'm a GM. I run BMW of Bridgewater. I sit in the same chair as every other dealer operator reading this blog, dealing with the same floor traffic patterns, the same OEM pressures, the same staffing challenges.

When I noticed that shoppers were showing up better-informed than ever — but our website traffic was flat — I started digging into where the research was actually happening. It was happening in AI. And when I asked those AI engines about my own store, the answers weren't always what I expected. That's what started all of this.

Being on CDG twice in one year isn't about personal exposure. It's validation that the problem AEO Whisperer was built to solve is real, it's urgent, and the industry is paying attention. When the largest automotive media platform in the country keeps bringing you back to talk about a topic, that topic has arrived.

What I Told Dealers on the Show

The advice I gave on both episodes hasn't changed at its core, even though the tools have gotten better. Go ask AI about your dealership right now. Open ChatGPT, open Claude, open Gemini, and ask "What's the best BMW dealer near Bridgewater, NJ?" — or whatever your brand and market is. Read the answer. That's what your next customer is seeing before they ever pick up the phone or walk on your lot.

Understand that this isn't a one-time exercise. AI models refresh. Your competitors optimize. The answers change. You need a way to monitor what AI is saying about you on an ongoing basis — not just a snapshot.

And recognize that AI visibility is built on real signals — your reviews, your content, your structured data, your online reputation across every platform AI reads. There's no shortcut. The dealers winning in AI search are the ones who've been doing the fundamentals right and making sure that work is visible to the engines that now answer for Google.
