ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude: Which AI Are Your Shoppers Actually Using?

ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude: Which AI Are Your Shoppers Actually Using?

Two weeks ago a customer walked into my BMW store with a printout. Not from our website. Not from a third-party lead provider. From Gemini. He'd asked it where to buy a certified pre-owned X5 in North Jersey, and Gemini handed him a short list — with our store on it, and with three specific inventory notes that were surprisingly accurate.

The next morning a different customer came in with a screenshot from ChatGPT. Same question, different dealership recommendation. Zero overlap with the Gemini list.

That's where we are in 2026. Shoppers aren't "using AI" — they're using a specific AI, and each one has a different opinion about your store.

The shopper population is splitting three ways

From what we see in the data and from talking to dealer friends running their own tests, the rough split on car-buying queries today looks like this:

    • ChatGPT — still the biggest single slice, especially for research-heavy shoppers comparing trims, reliability, and long-term ownership costs.
    • Gemini — growing fast because it's wedged into Google search, Android, and Chrome. Anyone who types a car question into Google is already touching it whether they realize it or not.
    • Claude — smaller share, but the users are disproportionately high-intent: professionals, small-business owners, and people using it through Cowork or a work account. Often the buyer, not the browser.

The problem isn't that shoppers are using AI. The problem is that your store might be a strong recommendation on one of them and completely invisible on the other two.

Why Gemini is quietly winning the local car search

Gemini has a structural advantage you can't ignore: it's reading the same Google Business Profile, Maps entity, and local pack signals your website has been optimized for since 2012. When a shopper asks Gemini "best BMW dealer near Bridgewater NJ," it's pulling from the exact signals your SEO vendor has been invoicing you for.

That sounds like good news. It's actually the trap. Most dealers assume their Google work carries over. It does — partially. Gemini also pulls from review sentiment, forum threads, and editorial content in ways traditional local SEO doesn't account for. If your reviews mention price-fixing or a bad F&I experience anywhere in the last 18 months, Gemini reads that too.

ChatGPT behaves like a stubborn friend

ChatGPT is less tied to live local data and more tied to what it was trained on, plus whatever it can retrieve from the open web when search is enabled. That means it often gives answers based on dealer reputations that are one to three years old.

If you had a rough stretch in 2023 and cleaned it up, ChatGPT may still be quoting the old you. If your sales manager ran a great program that went viral on a dealer forum, ChatGPT might still recommend you even if the program ended. It's stickier — which helps or hurts depending on which side of the story you're on.

Claude is the dark horse — and the buyer you want

Claude's user base skews toward professionals and business buyers. The volume is smaller, but the conversion math is different. A single fleet inquiry or a small-business owner looking at an X7 is worth more than ten tire-kickers.

And because Claude is used inside a lot of workflows (Cowork, Slack, internal tools), it often surfaces dealer recommendations in the middle of a research task rather than at the start of one. The shopper isn't searching — they're deciding.

What to do about it this week

You don't need a six-month content strategy. You need to know where you stand, model by model. That means running the same three-to-five questions your actual shoppers ask across all three AIs and writing down the answers. Then doing it again in 30 days to see if anything moved.

If one model is dragging down the others, find out why. It's almost always one of three things: stale review sentiment, missing schema or entity data, or a single forum thread punching above its weight.

We built AEO Whisperer to do exactly this kind of cross-model check, because doing it manually every month is a part-time job. You can run a free AEO check on your store and see how you score across ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini in about two minutes — aeowhisperer.com.

One incremental car deal pays for the tool for years. Not being on the list costs you every day.
